Making your PC Faster and Smoother

1. Most of you are having your desktop filled with useless icons and shortcuts. This is really a bad practice. You should try to keep your desktop clean. The number of icons you’re having on your desktop influences your booting time considerably. So, you should try to have the least number of icons on your desktop. I’m using Windows 7, and in my PC, I’m having only four icons on the desktop. All the rest are either pinned to the start menu, or in an ‘Icons’ folder which I’ve created on my desktop. Alternatively, you can add some of your frequently used tools in the Quick Launch bar.

2. Always keep your system drive, clean and defragmented. If possible, install all your programs to a separate drive, so that you can save up your virtual memory, which would make your PC run faster. Installing software onto your system drive uses up drive space, and only a little amount of space would be available for your PC to use as Virtual Memory. This is quite important. Always make sure you have enough space in your system drive for Virtual Memory.

3. Consider reducing the number of desktop gadgets on your PC. Desktop gadgets will consume a lot of memory. Always use a simple wallpaper and theme. Animated themes and screensavers, eats up your system memory faster. If you wish your PC to be faster, rather than beautiful, then consider using a simple theme and least visual enhancements. This will speed up your system performance.

4. Delete your ‘%temp%’ and ‘%tmp%’ on your system. These two folders contain temporary files which are not being used anymore. For deleting that, type %temp% or %temp% in Start > Run and select all the files and delete it. This can free up some disk space.

5. Use some programs like Teracopy which makes your file transfer faster by buffering your RAM. I prefer this program, because file transfers are now considerably faster, after I started using Teracopy.

6. Do not use multiple programs for the same purpose. That would slow down your system performance. Always use single software for one purpose, and make sure you use the best one available. For example, use Google Chrome as your browser because it is fast and you can find many useful Google Chome Extensions which will make your browsing experience easier.

7. Defragment your drives regularly. Also, use ‘Disk Clean-up Utility’ too. Both of these will make your PC smoother.

8. Empty your Recycle Bin frequently. Even though, you delete your files from your PC, those files are still present in the Recycle Bin, consuming the same amount of disk space.

9. Many of the software, you use in your daily life, is having auto start-up enabled. This programs starts running at the moment you switch your PC on. These programs will be consuming up your memory even while you don’t need them. They keep running in the backstage, and slow down your PC. To stop these programs from starting up automatically on logon, you can disable them. Do it by going to ‘msconfig’ in Start > Run. And in the Startup tab, mark all those programs which you don’t want to start up automatically, and click Disable All. Alternatively, you can go into that particular software’s settings, and disable Auto Invoke at start up.

10. Update your Antivirus software regularly, and scan your PC for worms and Trojans.Wormsand Trojans can affect your system’s performance severely. No matter whatever things you do, your computer will not be fast if it’s affected by viruses. Scan, detect and remove those Potentially Unwanted Programs.

11. Delete the contents of your ‘Recent’ folder. That consumes up disk space, and doesn’t harm your PC if you delete it. Much more importantly, it frees up disk space, which eventually fastens your system.
